Recipes define what resources are consumed when you sell a product. This is how OpenBook calculates:
  • Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) for each sale
  • Inventory deductions automatically

How Recipes Work

When you sell 1 Cappuccino, OpenBook automatically:
  1. Deducts 18g from Coffee Beans inventory
  2. Deducts 150ml from Milk inventory
  3. Deducts 1 from Paper Cup inventory
  4. Calculates COGS using weighted average costs

Adding Recipe Items

1

Navigate to Product

Go to Products → Catalog and click on a product
2

Open Recipe Tab

Click the Recipe tab in the product detail view
3

Add Ingredient

Click + Add Ingredient and select:
  • Resource: Which raw material
  • Quantity: How much is used
  • Unit: Measurement unit (must be compatible with resource’s unit)
4

Repeat for All Ingredients

Add all resources consumed by this product

Unit Conversions

Recipes can use different units than the resource’s base unit. OpenBook handles conversions automatically:
If Recipe UsesAnd Resource UsesOpenBook Will
18gg (Grams)Deduct 18g directly
0.5kgg (Grams)Convert to 500g, then deduct
150mlml (Milliliters)Deduct 150ml directly
0.15lml (Milliliters)Convert to 150ml, then deduct

Products Without Recipes

Some products don’t consume inventory:
  • Services (e.g., “Consultation” at $100/hour)
  • Digital goods
  • Items sold at cost (direct resale)
For these, simply don’t add any recipe items. The product will still be sellable, but no inventory will be deducted.

For Token Holders

Recipes provide cost transparency:
  • See exactly what goes into each product
  • Verify that COGS matches actual ingredient costs
  • Catch discrepancies between recorded and actual usage
